POPIA notice

Personal information, plainly

SalesTeams is a South African company and processes personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). This page says what we hold, where it came from, and what you can ask us to do about it.

01Who is responsible

SalesTeams ("we", "us") is the responsible party for the personal information described here. Our Information Officer oversees POPIA compliance and handles data subject requests.

02What we process

Two separate sets of information, held for different reasons.

Account holders, the people who use SalesTeams

  • Name, work email address, company, and the credentials you use to sign in.
  • Billing details required to take payment. Card data is handled by our payment processor, not stored by us.
  • Product usage: the searches you run, the campaigns you create, and the records you save.

Business contacts, the records our engine discovers

  • Business contact details: company name, business address, business phone number, work email address, website, and where published, a job title and the name of the person in that role.
  • The source each record came from, so any record we return can be traced back to where it was published.
  • A quality score derived from that information, which is our own assessment and not information about you that we collected from a third party.
03Where it comes from

We do not buy personal information from data brokers and we do not scrape private accounts. Discovered records come from information that is already published, including:

  • Business listings and mapping services.
  • Public business directories and industry association listings.
  • Company websites, including contact and team pages.
  • Public web search results.
  • Publicly visible professional profiles.
  • Public business registries, where a country registry is available for verification.
04Why we may process it

For account holders, we process personal information because it is necessary to provide the service you signed up for and to meet our legal and tax obligations.

For discovered business contacts, we rely on legitimate interest in business to business commercial communication: the information is published in a business context, it identifies a person in their professional capacity, and the purpose is limited to putting one business in contact with another. You can object to that processing at any time, and the way to do it is in section 06.

05What we do not do
  • We do not sell personal information.
  • We do not process special personal information as defined in section 26 of POPIA, including health, biometric, religious, political, or criminal information.
  • We do not knowingly process the personal information of children.
  • We do not build consumer or household profiles. Our engine targets businesses and the professional roles inside them.
06Your rights, and how to use them

Under POPIA you may ask us to:

  • Confirm whether we hold personal information about you, and give you a copy of it.
  • Correct or complete information that is inaccurate, misleading, or out of date.
  • Delete or destroy information we are no longer entitled to keep.
  • Stop processing your information for business to business outreach.

Email basheer@salesteams.ai with "POPIA request" in the subject line, or use the contact form and pick "Data and privacy request". Tell us the email address, phone number, or company listing the request is about so we can find the record. We may ask for enough information to confirm who you are before we act, which POPIA requires us to do.

A request costs you nothing. POPIA also gives you the right to complain to the Information Regulator, and you do not have to come to us first.

07What our customers must do

When a customer exports records from SalesTeams and contacts them, that customer becomes the responsible party for their own outreach. Our Terms of Service prohibit using SalesTeams in a way that breaches POPIA, GDPR, CCPA, CAN-SPAM, or comparable law, and prohibit sending spam. If you have received unwanted email from a company that found you through us, tell us who they are. We will act on the account.

08Security, retention, and transfers

We apply technical and organisational safeguards appropriate to the risk, including encryption in transit, restricted internal access, and audit logging. How long we keep each category of data, and the security measures behind it, are set out in our Privacy Policy, which also describes how this website uses cookies.

Some of the processors we rely on to host and operate the service are located outside South Africa. Where personal information is transferred out of the Republic, we do so on the grounds permitted by section 72 of POPIA, including where the recipient is subject to a law or binding agreement that provides comparable protection.

09Complaints

If you believe we have handled your personal information unlawfully, you can lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.
